Bronchoscopy directly visualises the windpipe and lung passages to diagnose persistent cough, blood in sputum (hemoptysis), lung infections, tumours, and shadows seen on X-ray or CT. Biopsies, brushings and bronchial washings taken during the same sitting are sent for pathology, culture and molecular tests.
Bronchoscopy also treats: removal of inhaled foreign bodies, clearing of mucus plugs and blood clots, control of airway bleeding, opening of tumour-blocked airways (debulking), and placement of airway stents — often providing immediate relief of breathlessness.
